HORNELL, New York — A 25-year-old Hornell man was arrested on March 11, 2025, after allegedly assaulting a victim and forcibly entering a hotel room during a dispute over noise levels, according to the New York State Police.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:56 p.m. at the Econo Lodge located at 7462 Seneca Road North. Troopers from SP North Hornell responded to a report of a physical disturbance and encountered multiple individuals outside the building upon arrival.

An investigation revealed that Zachary D. Smith, of Hornell, New York, had forcibly entered Room 137, assaulted the victim, and caused damage to the door frame and threshold. The victim sustained multiple injuries and was evaluated on the scene by Hornell City Ambulance before being transported to St. James Memorial Hospital for further treatment.

Smith faces multiple charges, including burglary in the second degree (a Class C felony), assault in the third degree (a Class A misdemeanor), and criminal mischief in the fourth degree (a Class A misdemeanor).

“This was a violent incident that could have escalated further,” said a spokesperson for the New York State Police. “We are thankful that the victim is receiving medical care, and we are working to ensure justice is served.”

Witnesses at the scene reported that the altercation began as a dispute over noise levels, though the exact details of the argument remain under investigation. Authorities have not released the identity of the victim or the nature of their injuries.
