YUMA, Arizona — The Yuma Police Department has issued a community notification regarding Jason Lee Sims, a level 3 sex offender who is now residing at 1st Street and 4th Avenue (homeless) in Yuma, Arizona.
Sims, 54, is described as 5 feet, 9 inches tall, weighing 200 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. He is classified as a high risk to reoffend, according to law enforcement.
Sims has a history of sexual battery and failure to register as a sex offender. His record includes:
- November 13, 1990: Arrested in San Diego County, California, for sexual battery, grand theft, and burglary.
- December 3, 1990: Pleaded guilty to one count of sexual battery in San Diego County Superior Court.
- October 20, 2001: Pleaded guilty to failure to register as a sex offender.
- September 6, 2017: Pleaded guilty to failure to register.
- September 17, 2019: Again pleaded guilty to failure to register.
Arizona law allows law enforcement agencies to release information about level 3 sex offenders to the public. Yuma police emphasized that they do not have legal authority to determine where Sims may live, and unless restricted by a court order, he is free to reside wherever he chooses.
“The Yuma Police Department believes that an informed community is a safer community,” officials stated. They also warned against using the information for harassment or criminal actions, as such behavior could lead to prosecution.
