Nottinghamshire man jailed in strangulation case

NOTTINGHAMSHIRE, England — A 36-year-old man was sentenced to 21 months in prison after CCTV footage captured him beating and strangling his former partner in a violent attack, Nottinghamshire Police reported Sunday. Richard Gill, of Chapel Road, Indian Queen’s Cornwall, pleaded guilty to the November 5, 2024, assault in Ollerton, which was recorded in chilling detail.

The incident unfolded when Gill, enraged during an argument, attacked the woman as she sat in an office chair. Footage showed him forcing her across the room with his hands around her throat, moments after he tried to rip the camera from the wall. The video also captured audio of a further assault. Arrested on November 7, Gill admitted to one count of intentional strangulation and one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm at Nottingham Crown Court on March 12, 2025. He also confessed to assaulting another woman in October 2020 during a family dispute.

Detective Constable Jacqueline Sharpe called Gill a “violent bully” who launched an “unprovoked attack” in the victim’s home. “The footage is hard to watch, but was a vital piece of evidence in bringing this man to justice,” Sharpe said. Medical evidence linked to the 2020 assault further solidified the case. Gill received a restraining order barring contact with his latest victim.

The strangulation offense, introduced in 2022, aims to better address abuse severity. No conflicting reports have emerged, though the 2020 assault’s specifics remain limited beyond Gill’s guilty plea. The Ollerton attack’s trigger wasn’t detailed, leaving some context unclear.

Nottinghamshire Police hailed the sentencing as a message against violence toward women. “This kind of violence is utterly abhorrent,” Sharpe added, pledging continued efforts to prosecute offenders. The case, first reported via social media on March 17, 2025, underscores the role of technology in securing convictions.
