Cochise County Sheriff’s Office warns of suspicious subject posing as utility worker

WILLCOX, Arizona — The Cochise County Sheriff’s Office is urging residents to remain vigilant after a suspicious incident involving a man posing as a utility worker was reported on Sunday, March 16, 2025.

At approximately 5:40 p.m., deputies responded to a call from a female resident off Marguerite Road in Willcox. The woman reported that a man had come to her home claiming to be from Valley Telecommunications and stated he needed to check a router installed at her residence. The caller became suspicious when she informed the man that no router had been installed at her home.

The suspect was described as wearing an orange vest with unidentified markings but no Valley Telecom insignia. He was driving a plain white truck, possibly a Ford, with a camper shell on the back. The caller also noted that the timing of the visit—on a Sunday evening—raised further concerns.

Deputies responded to the area but were unable to locate the suspect or the vehicle. However, they reported seeing a similar truck earlier in the day while responding to another call. The driver of that vehicle had pulled to the side of the road, appearing unfamiliar with the area.

“We are asking residents to remain cautious and report any similar encounters,” said a spokesperson for the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office. “This individual’s behavior is concerning, and we want to ensure the safety of our community.”

Authorities have not confirmed whether the suspect was attempting to scam the resident or had other intentions. No additional incidents involving the suspect have been reported at this time.

The Cochise County Sheriff’s Office is encouraging anyone who may have experienced a similar situation or has information about the suspect to contact them immediately. Residents are also advised to verify the identity of anyone claiming to be a utility worker by contacting the company directly before allowing access to their property.

“If something feels off, trust your instincts and call law enforcement,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. “Your vigilance can help prevent potential crimes.”
