Buckeye hazmat response to nitric acid leak

BUCKEYE, ArizonaAuthorities responded to a nitric acid leak at the Thatcher Company facility on Rainbow Road on March 20, 2025, at 2:21 p.m., according to a statement from the City of Buckeye Fire Department posted two hours ago at 4:09 p.m. PDT. The Buckeye hazmat response involved approximately 3,500 gallons of nitric acid spilling into a 5,000-gallon retention basin.

Buckeye Fire Medical Rescue, alongside hazmat teams from Goodyear, Arizona Fire and Medical, Surprise, and Phoenix fire departments, contained the spill, preventing further spread. The Buckeye hazmat response team assessed the scene, confirming stability with no adverse chemical reactions. RAVE alerts were issued as a precaution, advising residents to avoid the area, though no immediate danger was reported. Air quality monitoring is underway before cleanup begins.

The Thatcher Company facility previously experienced a nitric acid spill in June 2024, per azcentral.com, unrelated to today’s incident.
