Rabies Concerns Rise as Show Low Police Respond to Coyote Incident

SHOW LOW, Arizona — On May 1, 2025, the Show Low Police Department responded to reports of a coyote exhibiting unusual behavior in the Pine Oaks neighborhood on the south end of Show Low, amid a recent uptick in rabies cases among wild animals in the area. The incident has heightened local concerns, prompting authorities to urge residents to exercise caution around wildlife.

The coyote’s strange behavior, which could include aggression, disorientation, or lack of fear of humans, is a potential sign of rabies, a deadly viral disease that can spread to pets and humans through bites. Show Low has seen similar incidents in the past, with Navajo County Public Health confirming 12 rabies cases in wild animals in 2024, including foxes and skunks, often near residential areas like Pine Oaks. Residents are advised not to approach or attempt to feed wildlife, as such actions can attract potentially infected animals closer to homes. Keeping pets vaccinated and securing garbage can also reduce risks.

If you observe wildlife acting strangely in Show Low, please contact the Show Low Police Department at 928-537-5091 immediately. Staying vigilant can help protect the community from the dangers of rabies.

Let’s work together to keep Show Low safe for both residents and wildlife by remaining cautious and reporting any concerning animal behavior.
