WELLTON, Arizona — A tragic two-vehicle collision on April 23, 2025, claimed the life of 24-year-old Kevin Espinoza of Dateland, Arizona, and left another driver seriously injured, according to a Yuma County Sheriff’s Office press release issued on April 24 at 12:00 p.m. The incident occurred at approximately 4:45 p.m. at the intersection of S. Avenue 36E and E. County 11th Street, prompting an ongoing investigation into the circumstances of the crash.
The initial investigation revealed that Espinoza, driving a 2007 Ford Five Hundred northbound on S. Avenue 36E, veered into the southbound lane to pass another vehicle. For reasons still under investigation, he failed to return to his lane and collided head-on with a 2017 Dodge Ram 2500 traveling southbound. YCSO deputies and Wellton Fire responded, attempting lifesaving measures, but Espinoza succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the Dodge Ram, the sole occupant of the vehicle, sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to a Phoenix-area hospital. It remains unclear whether impairment contributed to the collision, a factor often scrutinized in fatal crashes in Yuma County, where 2023 data reported 42 traffic deaths, many linked to reckless driving behaviors.
