DILKON, Arizona — A large brush fire has shut down Navajo Route 6 between mileposts 37 and 38.5 in Dilkon, Arizona, as of 4:50 p.m. on March 27, 2025, according to the Navajo Police Department. All lanes are closed, and traffic is at a standstill while first responders work the scene—no word yet on when it’ll reopen.
The Navajo Police Department’s Dilkon District and Navajo Nation Fire & Rescue are on site, battling the blaze. They’re keeping everyone out except emergency vehicles and telling drivers to avoid the area and find other routes. Dilkon’s a small community on the Navajo Nation, about 30 miles south of Holbrook, and Route 6 is a key road for locals—closing it’s a big deal.
Fires aren’t new here. Back in 2018, the 377 Fire in Navajo County burned over 5,000 acres, sparked by a vehicle dragging a tailgate, and shut down State Route 377 for days. This one’s cause isn’t clear yet, but with dry conditions and winds this time of year, fires can spread fast. The Navajo Police are likely stretched thin—they cover seven districts, including Dilkon, with just 1.9 officers per 1,000 people, each patrolling 70 square miles on average. If you’re in the area, stay clear and stay safe.
