Officer-involved shooting in Rye leaves one dead

RYE, ARIZONA — A Gila County sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a man late Wednesday after responding to a report of trespassing and property theft at a business.

Deputies were called to GO AZ Motorcycles in Payson at about 11:51 p.m. after a security company reported property being removed from the business.

When deputies arrived, they found a pickup truck pulling a trailer loaded with a UTV and towing additional UTVs.

As deputies attempted to make contact, the driver failed to comply with commands.

One deputy fired his weapon, striking the driver.

Medical personnel later determined the driver was dead.

Authorities have not yet identified the deceased.

At least two male suspects fled the scene when deputies arrived.

Their whereabouts remain unknown.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office is working to gather additional information on the suspects.

Authorities urge residents to report any suspicious activity related to the incident.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety is investigating the shooting, while Gila County sheriff’s detectives continue to investigate the theft.

Multiple agencies, including the Tonto Apache Police Department, Payson Police Department, and AMR Ambulance, assisted in the response.
